Community Work – Midwifery Obstetric Units

line_23

We partner with, and help support a number of maternity units in the community such as at Retreat, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Vanguard and Hanover Park. Typically, these clinics are run by midwives. (Doctors visit once a week for consultation on mothers and babies).

In addition to consultation, the doctors and the MMH Nursing Education Department run in-service training programmes for the MOU staff.

If there happen to be issues which the clinic is unable to deal with (for example, the mother has high blood pressure, the baby isn’t growing or the baby is sick at birth, etc), the mothers and babies concerned are referred to Mowbray Maternity Hospital and transferred into our care. This group of mothers and babies make up the majority of our patients.
