Skin-to-skin care

line_23

Skin-to-skin care (also known as Kangaroo Mother Care) seeks to restore the closeness to mother felt by the infant in the womb by placing the newborn in direct skin-to-skin contact with the mother. Holding newborn babies skin-to-skin has been shown to  improve  psychological and physiological stability. Firstly, they can hear your heartbeat—a very familiar sound from their time in your womb—making them feel very secure and calm.  Physiologically, it helps regulate respiration, increase blood oxygenation levels, and stabilize heart rate and body temperature in the infant. Importantly, the skin-to-skin position promotes mother infant bonding and enhances breastfeeding.
